This is one of the most expensive vacations to take, as there are so much more to think about and at the same ensuring that everyone is happy. The thought of flying by itself is fun for everyone, but what would happen if you reach your preferred destinations and cannot enjoy anything at all. The money that would be saved on the flights could be used for tours of attractions, do fun activities and anything else that you desire.

Lowering the Cost of a Caribbean Vacation

Blue skies, golden sand, azure water and swaying coconut trees is an image etched in the minds of many when they think about the Caribbean. This image often fills the mind with a desire to visit a tropical island but then thoughts about whether it will be too expensive begin to intrude and dampen the desire. This article will look at ways to lower the cost of a Caribbean vacation so that you can visit those glorious beaches.

Getting There
Very often throughout the year there are special offers of reduced prices on airfare to various Caribbean islands. If you check regularly you can find a great deal on airfare. However that great deal may not be for the island that you want to go to or may not be at a time when you want to travel. If that is the case, one way you can reduce the cost of airfare is to be flexible on your travel days. On the major airlines flying to the Caribbean, flights on week days, especially mid-week are priced lower than flights on weekends. If you are also flexible in terms of the time of day you will find that where there are multiple flights to a destination, flights on off-peak hours are even cheaper. You will also find that multi-stop flights are priced lower than direct flights. You can achieve further savings on airfare by booking early, at least one to three months in advance of your departure date.

Accommodation
One of the major cost items in a Caribbean holiday is the cost of accommodation. One way to lower the cost of the accommodation is to consider staying in a house rather than a hotel. Throughout the Caribbean there are numerous villas, houses and cottages available for rental as holiday accommodation. By using a house, you can go on vacation with friends and share the cost of the rental, thus lowering the cost of your vacation.

There are beautiful villas in the Caribbean with all types of amenities including Jacuzzis, swimming pools, maid service, cable TV in every room. Before renting a villa, consider your activities (what do you plan to do) and therefore how much time will you spend in the vila to make use of the amenities. If you plan a very active vacation with plenty of outdoor activities, then you may find that you do not spend much time at the villa other than for sleeping. You may therefore not need a villa with all the amenities and houses with fewer amenities will cost less.

No friends who want to accompany you or maybe you desire privacy and an intimate setting then consider an apartment hotel or self catering hotel. With an apartment hotel you have the choice of eating out every day or using the hotel restaurant (if there is one). Self-catering hotels however provide another cost saving benefit, in that you can use the kitchen or kitchenette in the room to prepare some of your meals and so reduce part of the cost of your vacation. When considering a self-catering hotel you should use the Internet to examine the size of the kitchen area to see if it will allow you to prepare a decent meal.

Caribbean beaches are a major attraction on all islands and most visitors when thinking about a Caribbean vacation think about staying on the beach. Another method to save money on a Caribbean vacation is to consider a location away from the beach as such properties will cost less than accommodation that is directly on the beach. Make sure however that the house is within walking distance of the beach as you do not want to spend on transportation to get to the beach all the money you have saved on accommodation.

If you are considering a house or self-catering hotel, find out if there are any supermarkets within walking distance of the property, so that you can easily purchase items. When you visit the supermarket, buy local or regional brands rather than European or North American brands as you will generally find that local brands cost less.

Activities
Research the sights and places of interest before you travel. Very often tour guides take you to places that you could have easily gone to on your own. By researching you will know which places of interest you can easily find and so save the cost of a tour guide. The Internet has made researching sightseeing attractions much easier and one of the places you can learn about the places to visit on different Caribbean islands is at the Island Adventures Page of the Caribbean Outdoor Life web site.

On many islands there are numerous forts, historic buildings, old churches and government buildings that are very interesting to visit. While some attractions charge an entrance fee, there are many historical sites that have no entrance fee. The smaller forts and churches are usually free to visitors. As much of the early development was concentrated in the capital cities you will often find these free places in the capital.

Getting Around
If you do your advance research on your intended holiday destination at a site like Caribbean Outdoor Life, you can usually fit your sightseeing activities to places that are far from your accommodation into two or three days. This allows you to rent a car only for those days and so save on car rental fees. For the attractions that are closer to where you are staying you can use local transport such as buses to visit those attractions. Most front desk staff will be very happy to give you advice on using the local bus or taxi service.

Eating Out
Vacations allow one to do things that are out of the ordinary but pleasurable. Sampling different cuisines is definitely a pleasurable experience and on each island there is a wide range of cuisines and equally a wide range of prices. In deciding where to eat, looking for places that have a crowd is usually a good guide as to whether the food the good. If that crowd happens to be locals, you will usually find that not only is the food good but the price is lower than in the places frequented by tourists.

Street Food is a great way to get a quick meal at a low price and also experience local culture. The Caribbean has great street food, whether it is doubles in Trinidad or bar-b-cued pigtail in Barbados or jerk chicken in Jamaica. Before buying street food however, look at the cleanliness of the surrounding and of the person serving the food.

Other Costs
Although the idea of a vacation is to get away from it all, in today's world most people want to stay connected to the persons at home, even if it is to tell them how much they are enjoying themselves. One of the hidden costs on a vacation can be the cost of Internet access. Many hotels will advertise that they have internet access but this comes at an additional cost. Fortunately the number of places that are offering free Wi-Fi access is increasing. You can check sites like wifi free spot to find outlets at your destination that have free Wi-Fi, and Travel Post for a list of free Wi-Fi carrying airports in the Caribbean. If you do not have a free Wi-Fi hotspot near to where you are staying you can look for an Internet Cafe. A directory of Internet cafes can be found at cybercaptive. In choosing an Internet cafe look for places that don't seem to cater to tourists as their prices will generally be lower. Another source of low cost internet access is usually the public library. In some countries, internet access at the library is free, while at others there is a charge but it is significantly lower than at hotels of cafes.

Five Ways to Enjoy Your Summer Vacation

Joy, growth and renewal are what vacations should provide, however, in our fast-paced, over-scheduled and stress filled adult lives, we often overlook the value these benefits. Here are five ways to insure you enjoy your summer vacation.

1. Always use your vacation time.
According to the World Tourism Organization, Americans take an average of 13 vacation days a year compared to Brazilians who take 34 and Italians who take 42. Given those statistics, it's amazing that some of us actually don't use what little vacation time we have! If you're all about work and no play, you are surely headed for a burn-out down the road. You can't have an enjoyable vacation if you choose not to have one at all.

2. Define "vacation" on your own terms.
You don't have to take a trip, spend a lot of money, or even leave your house to have a vacation. All you need to do is take a break from your normal routine or work. If you happen to travel on your job, staying at home may be the perfect retreat for you. Or perhaps you'd like to spend your free time taking a pottery class, planting a garden, reading a few good novels, spending time with friends and family, or just listening to the birds sing while you gentle swing in your backyard hammock. A vacation is a frame of mind, not a place or schedule. So, do whatever gets you into it.

3. Do your research.
If you do plan on taking a trip, make sure there are no unpleasant surprises when you get there. Call and ask in advance to find out about things like kid friendly or pet friendly accommodations, transportation services, safety, climate, etc. There are plenty of travel books and Internet sites that provide all the necessary information to make your trip a pleasant one. Or, you can take the old-fashioned approach and book your travel arrangements through an experienced and knowledgeable travel agent or tour company.

4. Relax and enjoy.
Don't treat your vacation like a work project. Too much planning, organizing, list making and over scheduling gives you no time to relax and enjoy yourself. Get out of work mode and kick back. Don't feel as if every day needs an itinerary - unless you're on a group tour and all you have to do is show up. Try to space out planned activities to every other day with alternate days off for whatever you feel like doing in the moment. Otherwise, you'll end up needing a vacation from your vacation when it's all over!

5. Leave work behind.
The whole point of vacation is to take a break from work, not to have thoughts and messages from work mixing in with your sweet, creamy Pina Coladas or daring sky diving lessons. Leave the laptop behind, don't check voice mail, and don't call the office. Change your outgoing phone messages and set up an auto reply on email to make sure everyone knows you're not available until your return date. This is your time to put yourself first and have a happy vacation! BTW, that's what I'll be doing over the next couple weeks. Look for my next column at the end of the month.

Travel Tips For Corporate and Personal Safety

Unfortunately travel safety has become a major concern for both corporate and personal travelers. There are far too many predators out there trying to make money what they consider the easy way, by stealing it. Even more frightening is the fact that many are not looking for money but to rape or cause bodily harm. Everyone knows that crime exists and that the possibility of these events is real. However, way too many think it will never happen to them. There is no concrete secret that will guarantee that you will never fall victim to crime while traveling but there are measures you can take that can reduce the possibility. Adhere to these travel tips and give yourself the travel safety edge.

It is very important when you are traveling that you keep your luggage or briefcase close to you at all times until it has been checked in. Would be villains would like nothing better than too snatch it when you are least expecting it. A basic rule of thumb is this; if you cannot afford to lose it, don't carry it with you. One of the biggest errors corporate and personal travelers make is the ill-fated measure of drawing unwanted attention to his or herself. You may have it but it is not necessary to flaunt it in the wrong environment. Wearing expensive jewelry, rings and watches only makes you a target. It is always better to be low key and a part of the general landscape.

This may sound like something out of the movies but women should be very careful when accepting drinks from someone they do not know. In addition, they should never leave their drink unguarded. Drugs are often introduced at this point that will create a helpless victim very quickly. Plan your accommodations safely as well. Take the necessary precautions to ensure safety. Avoid staying at hotels that put you into potential bad situations. When you leave your hotel it is important not to form a routine. Criminals watch for regular routines so they can best plan their crime. Vary your schedule a little to keep them off guard.

Corporate personnel should not wear their nametags in public if they are utilized. If you are high on the corporate ladder you do not want to present this to a 'would be' crook. Never use cabs that are unmarked; this is not a safe practice. If you need to rent a vehicle make sure you do so with a company with a solid reputation. It is wise to always keep a working cell phone with you for emergencies. In addition, if you are driving only park in areas that are close to your destination and have plenty of good lighting. Make an effort to keep your money hidden from those who are around you. Once again you want to avoid throwing up red flags to criminals as if you are saying, "here is what I have come and get it". Do not be one of those travelers who thought following safety tips was useless. Your valuables and your life may depend upon it.

Tips For Women Traveling Alone

Nothing beats a weekend away from the hustle-bustle of work and everyday life. Whether it's just to visit a beach or a foreign place, women sometimes need to get away and just enjoy alone time. Here are some tips for women traveling alone.

Traveling solo opens up a lot of new opportunities to explore the world and get to know yourself better. The first tip is to plan ahead. Planning ahead not only allows you to get the best deals for airfare and accommodations, but also is advised for safety.

Choose flights that will take you to the place during the daytime. Arriving at your destination during the day is safer than arriving at night. Be very picky about the hotel that you're staying at. Choose the room which is most convenient. Know where the fire exits are, just in case of emergency. If you are bring important documents and jewelry with you, request for a safe and set a password that nobody knows except you.

Dress properly. Let's face it. You are not traveling to attract attention. It would also be helpful to make a quick research on how women dress on the country you're visiting. That way, you get to choose the safest outfits and explore the city without having to worry about anything.

Always have an itinerary. Bringing a map always helps, especially if it's your first time in the new place. When using public transport, be very careful and choose the most reasonable deals. Some countries take advantage of tourists who seem lost. Be confident and look as if you know where you're headed to.

Keep in constant communication with friends and family so they know what's happening. Email them from time to time or bring an international mobile phone just in case you need to call them.

Bring copies of your passport. You'll never know when these will come in handy and that this is only the type of identification that you need and is valid throughout the duration of your travel.

One of the tips for women traveling alone is that you need health insurance because you'll never know when you might need them. Bring all the medications and vitamins that will supply you energy during the trip. If you must bring other stuff for first aid (band-aid, alcohol, bandages), do so.

Stay alert everywhere you go and never be afraid to ask questions. Whether it be at a certain restaurant or the locations of the washrooms, don't be afraid to ask. If you are not comfortable talking to a stranger, then you might want to ring your hotel desk for assistance.

Be sure to have fun! Bring a travel journal with you and keep track of the beautiful places you've gone to, plus a digital camera which you could use to document the whole trip. Traveling alone need not be a daunting task, rather a brave and fun activity that is much-needed for relaxation and one that will lead to the path to self-discovery

33 Travel Safety Tips

Traveling to unfamiliar destinations can bring to you the sort of troubles you do not want to experience while on the road namely: robbery, rape, or murder. Tourists often fall prey to perpetrators because they do not prepare properly before embarking on a trip. Let's examine some things you should do to prevent your travels from becoming a tragedy:

1. Never list your home address on the luggage tag. If on business, put the company's address on the tag; if visiting friends you can list their address. Use covered luggage tags as well.

2. Stay with your luggage until the luggage is checked. If you must put your bag down, keep one foot on the handle.

3. Carry important papers with you; NEVER check anything that you simply cannot afford to lose. Photocopy your passport, driver's license and credit cards.

4. Bring a small flashlight. You never know when you'll suddenly be "in the dark" and find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings. At night, keep your flashlight by your bed.

5. Make sure that your prescription medicines are filled properly and labeled accurately. In some countries certain prescription medicines are forbidden.

6. Never wear anything that projects affluence. No gold chains, expensive watches and rings, luggage, or other paraphernalia should be in easy view. Better yet: leave your jewelry at home.

7. If possible travel with only one or two credit cards.

8. Women particularly should never accept a drink from a stranger. Keep an eye on your drink at all times.

9. Vary your schedule; try not to come and go at the same time everyday.

10. Only stay in a hotel that uses cards to open room doors and make sure your room has a peephole and a deadbolt lock. Secure the chain and secure the door by pushing a rubber stop under it.

11. Stay in a room near a stairwell. Never take the elevator if a fire or smoke is detected. Always stay in a hotel where the doors enter the hallway and not directly from the outside.

12. Do not wear name tags in public.

13. Do not use unmarked taxi cabs.

14. Sit behind the driver so you can see him, but he cannot see you.

15. Pay the driver upon arriving at your destination and while you are still sitting in the vehicle.

16. If you must rent a car, rent only from a reputable company. Any operating problems that occur could signal sabotage.

17. Be aware of 'staged' car accidents meant to catch you off card.

18. Back into your parking spaces to facilitate a quick exit.

19. Park only in well lit and well traveled areas.

20. If your cell phone does not work outside of the country, consider renting one that does for the duration of your trip.

21. If detained for whatever reason by an official, ask for identification. If in doubt, tell them that you want to see his superior. Keep your emotions in check.

22. If traveling with children, bring along an updated photograph of each child in the event that you become separated from them.

23. Write your child's name and your hotel number on each card; include a close friend's or relative's contact information on the card. Give a card to each child which they will carry with them as long as you are away. Destroy once home.

24. Discuss with your family what they would do in event of an emergency while away from home, e.g. whom to call, how to contact emergency personnel, etc.

25. Do not discuss travel plans, your room number or any other personal information in public within earshot of strangers.

26. Bring along a basic first aid kit with bandages, iodine, mosquito repellant, sunscreen, alcohol packets, dramamine, pepto bismol, diarrhea medicine, etc.

27. Familiarize yourself with train and bus schedules before traveling. Have an alternate plan in place in the event your transportation plans change.

28. Do not flash your passport in public. Discreetly show important documents to officials only.

29. Consider purchasing portable alarms that emit a loud sound.

30. Watch for scams on the street. Children working with adults are notorious as pickpockets.

31. Never flash your money in public. Exchange funds with reputable and recognized exchangers only.

32. Have tips ready in advance for service personnel.

33. Consider renting an escort [security] service if traveling in areas where crime is high.

The key to safe traveling in any area is situational awareness. Distractions because of luggage, children, hotel personnel, strangers, etc. can put you at risk. Know your surroundings and stay in control of every situation.
